Female-female threaded standoffs in brass and stainless steel M1 – M4 · Precision Components

Overview

Standoffs & Spacers from M1 – M4

Standoffs set the distance between two boards, a board and a chassis, or a panel and a frame. In a multi-board stack the accumulated error of four standoffs decides whether connectors mate without stress, so the length tolerance matters as much as the thread. A standoff that is 0.15 mm long tilts the board and loads one corner of a fine-pitch connector.

We machine standoffs from brass, stainless steel and aluminium on automatic lathes, with hex across-flats from 2.5 mm and lengths from 2 mm. Female-female, male-female and male-male configurations are all available, with through-thread or blind-thread options. Lengths are held at ±0.05 mm and the two end faces are square to the thread within 0.03 mm, which is what actually keeps a stack parallel.

Design intent

What this product solves

Six engineering decisions that separate a micro fastener that works from one that merely fits the drawing.

Length held at ±0.05 mm

Face-to-face length is ground or faced in a second operation, so a four-standoff stack stays parallel instead of loading one corner.

Square faces, true threads

End faces are square to the thread axis within 0.03 mm, preventing the tilt that misaligns fine-pitch board connectors.

Hex from 2.5 mm A/F

Small across-flats sizes suit densely populated boards where a standard 5.5 mm hex will not fit between components.

Through or blind thread

Through-thread for pass-through fixing, blind-thread where the thread must not breach the top face or where debris must be excluded.

Conductive or insulating

Brass and aluminium for grounding, anodised aluminium or nylon for isolation between noisy and sensitive grounds.

Swage and press-fit options

Standoffs can be supplied with a swage collar or press-fit knurl for permanent installation into a chassis panel.

Options

Heads, drives, materials and finishes

Mix these within one part number family. Where a combination is not manufacturable at your tolerance, we will say so at quotation rather than after the first lot.

  • Round body — Low profile, no spanner flats
  • Square body — Anti-rotation in a square hole
  • Swage collar — Permanent chassis installation

Questions

About standoffs

The questions our engineers answer most often on this product family.

Still deciding? Send the assembly drawing and the service condition. We will recommend a size, finish and locking method — and tell you if a different product family is the better answer.
Why does length tolerance matter so much?
Because errors accumulate. Four standoffs at +0.10 mm each lift the board 0.10 mm but also tilt it if they differ, and a 0.05 mm tilt across a 30 mm board is enough to stress a 0.5 mm pitch connector. We hold ±0.05 mm as standard and ±0.02 mm on request.
Brass, aluminium or stainless?
Brass is the default: good machinability, conductive, and takes nickel plating well. Aluminium is lighter and can be anodised for isolation. Stainless is for corrosion resistance and higher strength, but it is harder to machine at small hex sizes and costs more.
Can I get an insulating standoff?
Yes. Anodised aluminium gives a thin insulating layer that is mechanically robust; nylon and PEEK give full dielectric isolation. Tell us the isolation voltage and we will recommend a wall thickness.
Do you supply the matching screws?
Yes, and it is usually better to order them together. Standoff thread depth and screw length must be matched so the screw does not bottom out before the joint is tight.
