Manufacturing responsibility
A fastener plant has a specific environmental footprint: energy for furnaces, water for rinsing, chemistry for coating, and metal for scrap. These are the areas we manage, and the changes we have made.
Position
The most sustainable fastener is the one that does not fail
A screw that corrodes in the field becomes a warranty return, a service visit and a replacement part — with all the transport and packaging that implies. Designing the right finish and the right material for the service environment is therefore the largest environmental decision we influence.
Beyond that, the plant-level work is unglamorous: fill the furnace, counter-flow the rinse, keep the bath alive, segregate the scrap, train the operator. None of it makes a good photograph. All of it reduces impact.
At a glance
- Trivalent chromium in all zinc plating
- PVD for decorative colour instead of plating dyes
- Counter-flow rinse on plating lines
- Daily bath analysis to extend bath life
- Alloy-segregated scrap recycling
- Near-net-shape forging to minimise scrap
- ISO 14001-aligned environmental management
- RoHS and REACH declaration per part
Focus areas
Six areas we manage
Each area has a named owner and a monthly review. Where a figure is not yet measured, we say so rather than estimate.
01
Energy
Furnaces and coating lines are the largest energy consumers in a fastener plant. Loads are scheduled to run full rather than partially filled, furnace doors are opened only for loading, and consumption is tracked per process area so that a drift is visible rather than absorbed into an overhead.
- Load consolidation to reduce idle furnace time
- Process-level energy monitoring
- LED lighting and motor efficiency upgrades
02
Water and effluent
Plating and passivation generate rinse water and chemical effluent. Rinse stages are counter-flowed to reduce water use, and effluent is neutralised and treated before discharge. Bath chemistry is analysed daily so that a bath is replenished rather than dumped.
- Counter-flow rinse to cut water consumption
- pH and metal precipitation before discharge
- Bath life extension through daily analysis
03
Chemicals
We are moving away from hexavalent chromium chemistry: zinc plating is trivalent, and decorative colours are produced by PVD rather than by plating dyes. Where a hazardous substance is still required, it is stored, handled and recorded under a controlled procedure.
- Trivalent chromium only
- PVD replaces decorative plating chemistry
- RoHS and REACH declarations per part
04
Waste and scrap
Cold forging is near-net-shape, so scrap is inherently low compared with machining. Swarf and rejected parts are segregated by alloy and sold to licensed recyclers rather than sent to landfill.
- Near-net-shape forging minimises scrap
- Alloy-segregated recycling
- Coating waste handled as hazardous where required
05
Packaging
Reels and trays are reused where the customer returns them, and cartons are sized to the part rather than to a standard box. Where a customer accepts it, we use recycled content and reduce the number of packaging layers.
- Returnable reels where logistics allow
- Right-sized cartons
- Recycled-content board on request
06
People and safety
Press, furnace and chemical handling are the three main risks in this plant. Operators are trained and re-certified on each, PPE is specified by area, and near-miss reporting is encouraged rather than penalised — a near miss reported is a hazard removed before it becomes an injury.
- Role-based safety training and re-certification
- Area-specific PPE and guarding
- Near-miss reporting without penalty
Compliance
Substance compliance, declared per part
Every part number ships with a RoHS and REACH declaration covering the substrate and the coating. Where a customer has a restricted substance list beyond RoHS, we review it at quotation rather than at shipment.
RoHS
Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
REACH
SVHC screening and declaration for the finished article.
IECQ QC 080000
Hazardous substance process management discipline.
Conflict minerals
3TG sourcing statement for relevant material grades.
Customer requests
What we can support
If your programme requires environmental documentation beyond the standard set, ask before the order rather than after.
Material declarations
Full material composition by mass for the finished part, where the customer requires it for a compliance database.
Packaging reduction
Recycled-content board, reduced layers and returnable reels where the logistics allow.
Supplier questionnaires
Completed environmental and social responsibility questionnaires for customer audits.
Note: this page describes practices and intentions, not audited environmental performance figures. Specific metrics are provided in response to customer questionnaires and during audits, where the scope and method can be agreed.
Need environmental documentation?
Send the part number and the requirement list. We will confirm what is available and in what format.
