Overview

PVD Coated Screws from M0.8 – M6

PVD is not paint and it is not electroplating. A solid coating is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and deposited atom by atom onto the screw, forming a ceramic film 2–5 µm thick that is harder than the tool steel driving it. For micro screws this solves two problems at once: the drive recess stops deforming after a few thousand cycles on the assembly line, and the head can carry a durable decorative finish that electroplating cannot match.

We run multi-arc and magnetron sputtering chambers with fixtures designed for small fasteners, so parts are coated uniformly on the head, recess and thread rather than only on the line of sight. Standard films are TiN (gold), CrN (silver-grey), TiCN (grey-violet), TiAlN (dark grey) and DLC (near-black). Film thickness, adhesion and colour are verified per batch, and we can coat stainless, alloy steel, brass and titanium substrates.

Design intent

What this product solves

Six engineering decisions that separate a micro fastener that works from one that merely fits the drawing.

Harder than the driver bit

TiN and TiCN films reach HV 1800–2500, so the recess resists deformation through tens of thousands of automated drive cycles.

Low friction, controlled torque

The coefficient of friction of a PVD film is roughly half that of untreated steel, giving repeatable torque-to-preload without lubricant.

Decorative without plating chemistry

Gold, black, gunmetal and rainbow finishes are produced without hexavalent chromium or cyanide chemistry.

Uniform on micro geometry

Rotating fixtures expose the recess and thread flank to the vapour stream, avoiding the shadowing that causes patchy colour on small parts.

Adhesion verified per batch

Rockwell indentation and scratch testing confirm film adhesion; thickness is measured by X-ray fluorescence and cross-section.

Corrosion plus wear

A PVD film over a nickel or CrN interlayer delivers salt spray resistance while keeping the surface hard and slick.

Quality control

What we measure on every lot

Inspection is not a final gate. It is a set of checks placed where a process can actually drift, with the result recorded against the lot code.

Questions

About pvd coated

The questions our engineers answer most often on this product family.

Still deciding? Send the assembly drawing and the service condition. We will recommend a size, finish and locking method — and tell you if a different product family is the better answer.
Does PVD change the thread dimensions?
A 3 µm film adds roughly 3 µm to each coated surface, so a 6 µm diametral growth on the thread. For Class 6g this is normally acceptable, but for tight 6f fits we coat before final thread gauging or mask the thread. Tell us the fit class on the drawing.
Will PVD survive a salt spray test?
PVD alone is a hard ceramic film, not a sacrificial corrosion barrier. For corrosion resistance we apply a nickel or CrN interlayer, which typically delivers 96–480 h neutral salt spray depending on thickness and substrate.
Can you match a specific black?
Yes. DLC gives a near-black with a slight sheen; matte black PVD is available for a flatter look. We match against a physical chip or Pantone reference and keep a master sample for each project.
Is PVD safe for skin-contact products?
TiN and DLC are chemically inert and widely used in consumer wearables. We can supply biocompatibility documentation and RoHS / REACH declarations for the finished part.
