Self-Clinching Nut

Self-Clinching Nut

Self-clinching nuts use precision knurled serrations that cold-flow into pre-punched sheet metal, creating a permanent, high-torque, self-locking connection with a vibration-proof internal thread. Installed flush in 0.8–3.2mm thin sheets in under two seconds with a standard arbor press, they eliminate welding distortion and loose secondary hardware.

Product Specifications

Product Description

The Self-Clinching Nut is a threaded insert for thin sheet metal. It is pressed into a pre-punched hole, where the knurled serrations cold-flow the surrounding sheet material into the nut's undercut. The panel metal itself locks the nut in place, producing a permanent threaded anchor that cannot spin or push out in normal service.

The connection is validated to withstand more than 250 N·m of torque-out and more than 1,500 N of push-out force (per PEM® PSMT standards). Because installation is a cold-forming operation performed with a standard arbor press, it takes under two seconds per fastener and avoids the heat distortion, spatter and post-weld finishing that welding or riveting would introduce.

For precision panels, that matters: eliminating welding distortion preserves panel flatness, which is essential where even 0.05mm of warpage disturbs component mating and where hardware must meet IPC-A-610 Class 3 workmanship requirements. The nut installs flush in sheets from 0.8mm to 3.2mm thick and gives the assembly a clean, serviceable internal thread.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Permanent Cold-Flow Lock: Knurled serrations displace panel material into the nut undercut, creating a joint that resists spin and push-out.
  • High Load Capacity: Validated to over 250 N·m torque-out and over 1,500 N push-out (PEM® PSMT standards).
  • Fast, Weld-Free Installation: Presses into 0.8–3.2mm sheet in under two seconds with an arbor press — no welding distortion, no secondary hardware.
  • Preserves Panel Flatness: Cold forming keeps thin panels flat to the tolerances required by IPC-A-610 Class 3 assembly.
  • Vibration-Proof Thread: Provides a stable internal thread that holds preload in equipment subject to continuous vibration.

Application Industries

Deployed where structural integrity equals zero-downtime reliability, self-clinching nuts are common in server racks and data-center chassis that need vibration-proof M3 and M4 threads for hot-swappable drive trays and motherboard standoffs, and in telecom hardware such as base-station cabinets and network enclosures.

They are equally at home in industrial control panels, instrumentation housings, medical device chassis and aerospace brackets — anywhere thin sheet must provide a strong, permanent threaded fixing point without welding or loose hardware.
