Liquid cooling left the supercomputer lab when UQD (Universal Quick Disconnect) standards made connections swap-friendly across vendors. The fasteners around those fittings complete the sealing story.

The UQD interface in brief

UQD specifies standardized panel-mount fittings with O-ring sealing and push-to-connect lockings — racks, manifolds and hoses from different suppliers meet interchangeably. The fitting mounts to plates and manifolds with screws; those joints are wet-side-adjacent and cannot tolerate leaks.

Fastening requirements around the loop

  • Sealing under-head hardware at every manifold-to-bracket penetration — one drip path defeats the whole design.
  • Vibration: pumps and fans make the loop a moving environment; locking features on all wet-path brackets.
  • Dissimilar couples: aluminum manifolds with stainless screws need isolation or compatible coatings to prevent galvanic pitting in condensation.

Service-first design

Cooling loops are serviced quarterly: captive hardware on access panels, standardized drives, and threads in aluminum manifolds protected by inserts for repeat opening.
