Below M2, fastening stops being scaled-down bolting and becomes its own discipline. The screw head is thinner than the driver's tolerance budget.

The physics of tiny threads

Thread depth at M1.2 measures tens of microns — a few grains of debris destroy engagement. Torque values sit at 1–5 cNm, where wrist tremor exceeds spec. Preload scatter from friction is proportionally huge, so joints must be designed fail-safe: plastic deformation features, thread-forming into plastic bosses, or redundant retention.

Assembly realities

  • Torque drivers need 0.1 cNm resolution and daily verification.
  • Vacuum or magnetic bit retention is mandatory; dropping an M1 screw into a speaker cavity writes off the assembly.
  • Tape-fed automatic drivers place thousands of micro screws per shift with better repeatability than any hand.

Design for the operator

Standardize on one drive family (Torx or hexagon) across the product, color-code special lengths, and design bosses so an over-torqued screw strips the boss — not the screw — for serviceability.
