Surviving sterilization

Autoclave steam at 134 °C, plus alkaline detergents, corrodes marginal stainless mercilessly. Specify A4 (316-class) with proper passivation; avoid crevices where bioburden hides — sealing washers under heads, smooth transitions, no trapped slots. Coated carbon steel is generally out: coatings chip under instrument-service handling and shed particles.

Materials and biocompatibility

  • Implant-adjacent and skin-contact hardware: ISO 10993-evaluated materials or well-known implant alloys.
  • No zinc or nickel coatings on patient-contact paths — nickel release is a regulatory topic.
  • Lubricants must be medical-grade; standard anti-galling compounds are contaminants.
