A washer spends its life doing three quiet jobs: spreading bearing load, protecting surfaces and stabilizing friction. Choosing one is matching jobs to geometry.

The standard choices

DIN 125 (ISO 7089/7090) is the everyday flat washer: moderate OD, sized to hex bearing faces. DIN 9021 (ISO 7093) widens the OD substantially for soft parents, oversized holes and thin sheet — where bearing pressure, not bolt strength, is the limit. Fender-style large-OD washers trade bulk for dramatically lower contact pressure.

Three selection errors worth avoiding

  • Using large-OD washers on everything: bigger bearing circle lowers pressure but also lowers the friction radius, changing torque conversion subtly.
  • Washers harder than the parent they protect: a hardened washer on soft plastic punches a ring into it; use plastic-compatible wide flanges.
  • Assuming washers prevent loosening: plain flat washers neither add nor resist transverse slip — locking is a separate decision.

When no washer is best
