GB, DIN, ISO and ANSI: Where Fastener Standards Actually Differ

Global supply chains mix fastener standards freely — often without checking whether they are freely mixable. Most are compatible; some are not.

Where the families converge

Hex cap screws ISO 4014/4017, DIN 931/933 and GB/T 5782/5783 share identical thread geometry (metric ISO thread), head widths and strength-class systems for most sizes. Substitution between them for general machinery is routine and safe. ANSI inch hardware, however, runs UNC/UNF threads and different head dimensions — an M10 bolt will not replace a 3/8"-16, ever.

Where substitution bites

  • Flange bolts: ISO 4162 and GB/T 5789 differ in flange geometry details that affect bearing fit.
  • Socket screws: DIN 912 and ISO 4762 agree, but older drawings citing DIN 7984 (low head) have no ISO twin with same head height.
  • Torque values: table values are standard-specific because head bearing areas differ.

Practical rule

Substitute within the same thread system only after comparing the full standard, not the dimension table alone.
