Civil and military aerospace did not adopt wire thread inserts by fashion — they codified them. Two documents govern most procurements.

AS8879: the geometry contract

SAE AS8879 defines the installed and uninstalled geometry of screw-thread inserts for MJ and UNJ class threads: coil dimensions, tolerance, locking features and the STI tap thread form. If your drawing cites AS8879, the supplier must hold thread class on the assembled product, not just ship inserts that look right. Acceptance is by gaging, and the standard names the gages.

MS21209: the material and process spec

The MS series covers material, heat treatment, protective finish and quality conformance for aerospace inserts — including the famous tang-break and prevailing-torque requirements. Fleet-critical hardware additionally demands lot traceability back to wire melt.

What this means for purchasing

  • Ask for the standard revision letter on the quote; rev drift is real.
  • Require certificates of conformance naming AS8879 rev and lot numbers.
  • For flight hardware, expect first-article inspection per AS9102.
