Reading a Fastener Drawing: Six Callouts That Prevent Wrong-Part Orders

A fastener RFQ is judged before any metal is cut: if the drawing is ambiguous, quotes diverge and first deliveries surprise. Six callouts remove the ambiguity.

The six

  1. Full thread designation: nominal × pitch × length × thread class (e.g. M4×0.7×16–6g). "M4×16" leaves the class to guesswork.
  2. Head standard with revision: "per DIN 912:2008" — not just "DIN 912."
  3. Property class or alloy+temper: 10.9, or 7075-T6, not "high strength."
  4. Finish with salt-spray hours: "Zn-Ni 480 h NSS" beats "corrosion resistant."
  5. Drive and secondary features: hexalobular size (T15), anti-rotation flats, captive shoulder geometry.
  6. Critical tolerances flagged: coaxiality of head to shank, perpendicularity of bearing face — the tolerances that separate precision screws from catalog parts.
