Property classes look like a simple ladder — 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 — but each step trades ductility for strength. Understanding the trade prevents both underspecifying and over-hardening.

What the numbers hide

Hardness resists indentation and wear; toughness absorbs impact and overload without cracking. Quench-and-temper steel toward higher hardness and tensile strength falls, and impact toughness falls faster. A 12.9 screw at full strength tolerates far less abuse — bending, galling, over-torque — than a 8.8 sibling before it snaps instead of yielding.

Matching the class to the duty

  • Structural and safety joints with shock loads: prefer 8.8–10.9 with real ductility as the energy absorber.
  • Space-critical precision joints: 12.9 with controlled installation torque and protected threads.
  • Wear surfaces and set screws: high hardness is genuinely the point.

The metallurgical middle path

Tempering temperature is the lever: higher tempering sacrifices some strength for much toughness. Clean steel with low sulfur also matters — inclusions are pre-made cracks.
