Aluminum fasteners live in a narrow window: strong enough to carry structural load, light enough to beat titanium on cost. Two alloys split that window.

The numbers that matter

7075-T6 delivers roughly 570–600 MPa tensile strength — comparable to class 8.8 steel at one-third the density. 6061-T6 tops out near 310 MPa. For highly loaded joints (battery structure, motorsport brackets), 7075 is the only aluminum candidate; for low-load covers, spacers and thermal-path hardware, 6061 wins on cost and corrosion behavior.

Manufacturing behavior differs as much as strength

  • Cold heading: 6061 forms readily; 7075 needs heated dies or controlled routes, raising process cost.
  • Machining: 7075 machines beautifully — better than 6061 for precision screws.
  • Anodizing: both anodize; 7075's copper content darkens Type III hard-anodized finishes.

Galvanic and fatigue notes

7075's higher strength concentrates stress, so thread forms matter more: rolled threads are near-mandatory for fatigue-limited applications.
