Property class 12.9 (1,200 MPa nominal) is the everyday ceiling of catalog screws. Classes beyond it exist, and they change engineering behavior more than datasheets suggest.

What higher classes buy

At equal size, a 14.9-class screw carries ~17% more clamp load than 12.9 — enabling smaller, lighter joints in power tools, engine internals and motorsport hardware. The preload ceiling rises with the material, provided the joint can absorb and distribute it.

What higher classes cost

  • Hydrogen embrittlement risk rises sharply above ~1,000 MPa; plating processes and baking schedules become safety-critical controls.
  • Notch sensitivity: fillet radii, thread run-outs and scratch tolerance stop being details and become design constraints.
  • Installation torque grows beyond common tooling: 14.9-class M6 joints demand calibrated drivers with real headroom.

Design discipline

Specify the lowest class that passes the load case, not the highest that sounds safe — ductility is a feature.
