
Marine fastening is zoning exercise. The same product line may cross four corrosion environments, and one material choice for all of them is either unsafe or wasteful.
Salt-laden air, wet-dry cycling, no direct spray. Properly passivated 316 stainless with crevice management (sealing washers, avoid trapped gaps) provides decades of service. Zinc-nickel on steel is the economical alternative where strength above A4-70 is needed.
Alternating wetting and drying is the most aggressive condition — oxygen is abundant and chlorides concentrate. Move to higher-alloy stainless (6-moly, duplex) or seal every crevice deliberately. Monitor for crevice initiation at the first annual service.
Oxygen-starved immersion shifts the problem to galvanic couples. The fastener is usually the noble element; isolate with insulating sleeves and washers, or accept the fastener as designed cathode only with a sacrificial anode strategy.
