Teams chase IP67 with elaborate gaskets, then sabotage the rating with default fasteners. Every screw crossing the seal line is a potential leak path.

Three fastener zones in a sealed enclosure

Outside-the-seal screws (mounting feet, brackets) are conventional. Inside-the-seal screws are invisible to water but must not pierce the wall. On-the-seal screws — cover attachments landing directly on the gasket — are the critical zone: they set gasket compression and create their own penetration.

Cover screws done right

  • Use a continuous gasket with pre-defined compression stops; fastener preload must compress 20–30%, not crush.
  • Specify captive screws for service covers so hardware never migrates into the seal groove.
  • On plastic housings, use wide flange heads or washers to spread load over ribbed bosses.

Test the system, not the parts

IP validation should run after thermal cycling and vibration, because gasket relaxation and screw back-out appear only under combined stress.
