Reflow-Mounted Seals: SMT Sealing Plugs Bring Sealing into the Pick-and-Place Line

Electronics housings increasingly arrive at assembly as SMT-populated parts — so why should their seals still be hand-installed? Surface-mount sealing plugs close the gap.

How they work

An SMT sealing plug is a stand-off body with a compliant sealing element and solderable pads or pins. It is placed by the standard pick-and-head like any component, and during reflow the solder joints anchor it while the elastomer, chosen for peak-temperature survival, seats against the board or boss. The result: hermetic or splash-rated closures at zero added labor.

Design considerations

  • Temperature class: FKM and silicone elements survive typical SAC reflow profiles; verify with your paste supplier's profile.
  • Retention before reflow: tack or friction features prevent tombstoning during placement.
  • Post-reflow pressure rating differs from press-in plugs; derate accordingly.

Where it pays off

Sensor housings, antenna radomes and any molded part flowing through SMT lines gain a sealed port without an extra process step. Topprecision's SMT range — plugs, stand-offs and spring elements — is designed for standard feeder formats, and our engineers co-review reflow profiles with customers before qualification.
