
Seal failures are rarely gasket failures — they are preload-distribution failures. The gasket sees whatever pattern the bolts impose.
Between bolts, gasket compression falls off. A rule of thumb keeps bolt spacing under 4–5 flange thicknesses for soft gaskets, less for hard ones. Beyond that, the middle of the span under-compresses and leaks there first — usually at the corner bolt farthest from its neighbors.
Thin plastic covers with steel screws concentrate load at each fastener and bow between them. The fixes: flange washers or wide-head screws to spread the load, more bolts at lower torque, or ribbed boss design to stiffen the flange locally.
