In optics, sensors and cleanroom electronics, a fastener's worst property is not strength — it is what it sheds. Cleanliness becomes a specification with numbers.

The contamination sources

Drawing lubricant residue, plating salts from inadequate rinsing, packaging fibers and human handling each contribute particles and films. Under heat or vacuum, oils outgas and condense on lenses and sensors; particles liberated by assembly vibration migrate to wherever air moves them.

Specifying cleanliness

  • Ultrasonic or aqueous cleaning as a final step, with particle-count verification per defined method.
  • Vacuum-bake for outgassing-critical applications; specify maximum mass loss, not "low outgassing."
  • Double-bag cleanroom-compatible packaging with lot labeling; opening procedure is part of the spec.

Handling after the bag opens
