Most fasteners assume a static joint. But indexing fixtures, sliding doors, test rigs and floating mounts need hardware that pushes, positions or yields on purpose.

Spring plungers: positioning with force

A spring plunger is a spring-loaded pin in a threaded body: it presses a mating surface, indexes detents, or absorbs stack-up tolerance. Threaded bodies install like screws; the spring force — not thread torque — does the work. Specify by nose style (ball, round, flat), force range and travel.

Spring-loaded screws: clamp with compliance

Where clamp force must tolerate thermal expansion or fragile parts — glass, sensors, composite lids — spring-loaded screws deliver force within a band instead of a rigid lock. The spring keeps contact while the housing absorbs motion; over-travel stops protect the spring.

  • Match force band to the load case; undersized springs chatter, oversized ones jam sliding parts.
  • Check side-load capacity: plungers are axial devices, not guide bearings.
