AOI and Mechanical Hardware: Making SMT Fasteners Inspectable

AOI lines flag what they cannot characterize. Mechanical hardware — standoffs, inserts, springs — either presents inspectable geometry or generates false calls that erode line trust.

Geometry that cameras can read

Design standoffs with visual datum features: asymmetric feet that break rotational ambiguity, flat reference tops for coplanarity measurement, and non-reflective plating. Bright zinc plating dazzles AOI lighting; matte nickel or black oxide images far more reliably.

Program setup essentials

  • Golden-sample libraries per part number, refreshed when plating lots change appearance.
  • Coplanarity windows realistic for stamped parts (±0.08–0.12 mm), not semiconductor-grade numbers.
  • Polarity/orientation references on tape pockets that AOI can cross-check.

Beyond AOI: electrical and functional checks

Grounding springs deserve contact-resistance sampling; sealing plugs deserve pressure tests. Mechanical function cannot be optically verified, so build sampling plans around the failure that matters. Topprecision supports AOI integration with reference image sets and golden samples per order, and its SMT parts are designed from the start for camera legibility.
