Pick failures trace back to tape geometry more often than to the part itself. A few rules keep automated feeding boring — in the good sense.

Pocket and part co-design

The pocket should locate the part by its functional datum, not its bulk: an anti-rotation flat or head hex in pocket contact prevents ambiguous orientation. Allow 0.2–0.5 mm lateral clearance — enough for placement head tolerances, little enough to stop tumbling. Height clearance over the tallest feature needs the same discipline.

Pitch and sprocket holes

  • Standard pitches (4, 8, 12 mm) match your feeder; non-standard pitch means custom loader settings forever.
  • Cover-peel force must stay in feeder spec — over-tacky sealing film lifts small parts out of pockets.
  • Orientation marking: a printed arrow on the tape aids vision systems but never replaces mechanical orientation.

Validate with the real feeder

Run one reel through the actual line at production speed; stationary feeder tests miss vibration-induced mis-picks.
