A perfectly designed SMT standoff still fails if it arrives in a bag. Packaging format determines whether the pick-and-place line treats hardware as components or as interruptions.

Tape-and-reel

Embossed carrier tape suits parts to roughly 25 mm footprint: standoffs, inserts, small springs. Confirm tape width, pocket pitch and orientation marking against your feeder standard; a part that sits ambiguous in the pocket doubles up vision-system rejects.

JeDEC trays

Larger bodies and delicate geometries travel better in trays. Trays handle weight but need manual or robot loading; economics favor them above about 50 mm parts or low volumes.

Bowl feeding

For DIP lines and mixed automation, vibratory bowl feeds remain valid — and hardware with asymmetric features feeds more reliably than cylinders that can sit backward.

Specify format at design time
