Reading a Fastener Datasheet: Ten Fields to Check Before You Order
Datasheets make products look interchangeable until assembly day. Ten fields separate a specification from a brochure.
The ten
- Full thread designation with tolerance class.
- Material and temper (or property class) with certificate level offered.
- Strength numbers: tensile, yield, and — for joints that care — shear and fatigue.
- Torque-preload data: K-factor or torque table with assumptions stated.
- Coating system with salt-spray hours and standard cited.
- Temperature range, including any non-metallic elements.
- Reusability: assembly cycles validated, locking retained after removals.
- Vibration performance: test method and residual-preload result.
- Inspection level: 100% gaged, AQL sampling, or "trusted supplier."
- Documentation: RoHS/REACH, 3.1 certificates, PPAP availability.
The blank-field cost
