Overview
A Topsert solid insert is a threaded bushing with an external thread but no through bore, used to plug a hole or to rebuild a thread in a location where the original hole has been misdrilled or worn oversized. Because the body is solid, it can be installed, drilled and tapped to a new thread on site, which makes it a repair part rather than a pre-planned design element. This listing: external thread 7/16-14, length 0.37 in, material Stainless steel, application Misaligned-hole repair / hole plugging.
Advantages
The insert can be drilled and tapped after installation, so the final thread size and position are set on the machine rather than dictated by the insert's own bore.
Key locking prevents the insert from rotating during the secondary drilling and tapping operation, which is the point where a friction-fit plug would spin.
The solid body allows the repair to be completed without welding or inserting a sleeve, so a casting with one damaged hole does not become scrap.
External thread engagement over the full insert length carries the load into sound parent material around the damaged zone rather than relying on the weakened original thread.
Applications
Misdrilled holes in castings, repair of oversized or stripped threads where no larger screw is acceptable, plugging obsolete ports in hydraulic and pneumatic blocks, and salvage of machined parts where a single hole is out of position.
The insert length must be short enough to leave parent material at the bottom of the hole for the external thread to bite, especially in blind holes. Confirm the final thread can be cut without breaking through into a cavity.
