Overview

Sealing fasteners close a joint against water, dust or gas ingress while still carrying mechanical load. The seal is usually achieved by a moulded elastomer element under the head or by a pre-applied sealant bead, so the fastener must be tightened to a defined preload — too little and the seal leaks, too much and the elastomer is crushed and takes a permanent set. Advantages

Preload control is the sealing parameter: the elastomer needs a defined compression band, so the torque specification is tighter than for a plain fastener.

Reusable designs hold their seal through several service openings, which matters on equipment with scheduled maintenance.

An integral seal removes the separate O-ring or gasket from the assembly, eliminating a handling step and a common source of line stoppage.

Applications

Outdoor electronics enclosures, automotive underbody and lighting modules, pump and valve bodies, and equipment that must hold an IP rating after service.

State the required IP or pressure rating and the number of expected re-openings. A seal that passes a leak test when new may not survive the third service cycle.
