Overview

Sealing fasteners close a joint against water, dust or gas ingress while still carrying mechanical load. The seal is usually achieved by a moulded elastomer element under the head or by a pre-applied sealant bead, so the fastener must be tightened to a defined preload — too little and the seal leaks, too much and the elastomer is crushed and takes a permanent set.
